RESUMO

Empty follicle syndrome is a rare condition characterized by failure to retrieve oocytes despite repeated careful aspiration of mature precursor follicles during controlled ovarian stimulation. This report presents a case of empty follicle syndrome in a patient with polycystic ovary syndrome using a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist as a trigger for final oocyte maturation. No oocytes were retrieved from the right ovary and the procedure was discontinued. The patient was administered an injection with 10,000 units of HCG and 3 oocytes were obtained after 24 hours. All oocytes were mature (MII); fertilization was performed with sperm from the patient's husband resulting in 3PN zygotes. The formation of 3PN zygotes from ICSI might be due to oocyte cytoplasmic disorders caused by long-term exposure to gonadotropins and increased duration of stimulation. Although our patient had false empty follicle syndrome and the hCG rescue protocol led to the retrieval of oocytes, the oocytes were not of good quality. As previously described, empty follicle syndrome is not a predictor of success in subsequent cycles. Our patient's next cycle was uneventful.

This review examines and compares the diagnostic and prognostic capabilities of miRNAs and lncRNAs derived from pseudogenes in cancer patients. Additionally, it delves into their roles in cancer pathogenesis. Both miRNAs and pseudogene-derived lncRNAs have undergone thorough investigation as remarkably sensitive and specific cancer biomarkers, offering significant potential for cancer detection and monitoring. . Extensive research is essential to gain a complete understanding of the precise roles these non-coding RNAs play in cancer, allowing the development of novel targeted therapies and biomarkers for improved cancer detection and treatment approaches.

RESUMO

The cause of leukemia, a common malignancy of the hematological system, is unknown. The structure of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is similar to mRNA but no ability to encode proteins. Numerous malignancies, including different forms of leukemia, are linked to Lnc-RNAs. It is verified that the carcinogenesis and growth of a variety of human malignancies are significantly influenced by aberrant lncRNA expression. The body of evidence linking various types of lncRNAs to the etiology of leukemia has dramatically increased during the past ten years. Some lncRNAs are therefore anticipated to function as novel therapeutic targets, diagnostic biomarkers, and clinical outcome predictions. Additionally, these lncRNAs may provide new therapeutic options and insight into the pathophysiology of diseases, particularly leukemia. Thus, this review outlines the present comprehension of leukemia-associated lncRNAs.

CONTEXT: Different intermittent fasting (IF) protocols have been proven to be efficient in improving cardiometabolic markers, but further research is needed to examine whether or not combining IF regimens plus physical exercise is superior to control diets (ie, nonfasting eating) plus physical exercise in this setting. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether or not combining IF plus exercise interventions is more favorable than a control diet plus exercise for improving cardiometabolic health outcomes. DATA SOURCE: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were comprehensively searched until April 2023. DATA EXTRACTION: Electronic databases were searched for clinical trials that determined the effect of IF plus exercise vs a control diet plus exercise on body weight, lipid profile (high-density lipoprotein [HDL], low-density lipoprotein [LDL], triglycerides, and total cholesterol), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively). Analyses were conducted for IF plus exercise vs a nonfasting diet plus exercise to calculate weighted mean differences (WMDs). DATA ANALYSIS: The meta-analysis included a total of 14 studies, with a total sample of 360 adults with or without obesity. The duration ranged from 4 to 52 weeks. IF plus exercise decreased body weight (WMD = -1.83 kg; P = 0.001), LDL (WMD = -5.35 mg/dL; P = 0.03), and SBP (WMD = -2.99 mm Hg; P = 0.003) significantly more than a control diet plus exercise. HDL (WMD = 1.57 mg/dL; P = 0.4) and total cholesterol (WMD = -2.24 mg/dL; P = 0.3) did not change significantly for IF plus exercise vs a control diet plus exercise, but there was a trend for reducing triglycerides (WMD = -13.13 mg/dL; P = 0.07) and DBP (WMD = 2.13 mm Hg; P = 0.05), which shows clinical magnitude. CONCLUSION: IF plus exercise improved some cardiometabolic outcomes (body weight, blood pressure, and lipid profile) compared with a control diet plus exercise. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders with major global health consequences. The prevalence of CVDs continues to grow due to population-aging and lifestyle modifications. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as key regulators of cell signaling pathways have gained attention in the occurrence and development of CVDs. Exosomal-lncRNAs (exos-lncRNAs) are emerging biomarkers due to their high sensitivity and specificity, stability, accuracy and accessibility in the biological fluids. Recently, circulatory and exos-based-lncRNAs are emerging and novel bio-tools in various pathogenic conditions. It is worth mentioning that dysregulation of these molecules has been found in different types of CVDs. In this regard, we aimed to discuss the knowledge gaps and suggest research priorities regarding circulatory and exos-lncRNAs as novel bio-tools and therapeutic targets for CVDs.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are an emerging class of non-coding RNAs that do not encode proteins. These RNAs have various essential regulatory functions. Irregular expression of lncRNAs has been related to the pathological process of varied diseases, and are considered promising diagnostic biomarkers. LncRNAs can release into the circulation and be stable in body fluids as circulating lncRNAs. A subset of circulating lncRNAs that exist in exosomes are referred to as exosomal lncRNA molecules. These lncRNAs are highly stable and resist RNases. Exosomes have captured a great deal of attention due to their involvement in regulating communications between cells. In conditions of autoimmune disease, exosomes play critical roles in the pathological processes. In this context, circulating lncRNAs have been shown to modulate the immune response and indicated as prognosis and diagnostic biomarkers for autoimmune diseases. This review highlights the role of circulating lncRNAs (particularly exosomal) as diagnostic biomarkers for autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, and Sjögren's syndrome.

Congenital abnormalities of the uterus result primarily from embryological maldevelopment of the paramesonephric ducts and have been associated with pregnancy complications, reduced fertility, and other adverse fetal outcomes. While such abnormalities are rare, affected patients should be correctly managed to improve psychological, sexual, and reproductive outcomes. This review intends to elucidate the impact of congenital uterine abnormalities on fertility and pregnancy outcomes. We also present the available management methods and discuss the role of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to benefit affected women. This review clearly shows that although these disorders are generally not lethal, they critically impact the patient's reproductive health. The fertility rate of patients with uterine congenital abnormalities depends on the severity of the condition. Reproductive endocrinologists and infertility specialists must be considered as active parts of the interdisciplinary treatment team for such patients. ART practices are reasonably successful at managing fertility problems of women with these abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: When a new pathogen, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, appears all novel information can aid in the process of monitoring and in the diagnosis of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The aim of the current study is to elucidate the specific miRNA profile which can act as new biomarkers for distinguishing acute COVID-19 disease from the healthy group and those in the post-acute phase of the COVID-19 disease. METHODS: The expression level of selected miRNAs including let-7b-3p, miR-29a-3p, miR-146a-3p and miR-155-5p were evaluated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of COVID-19 patients, in both the acute and post-acute COVID-19 phase of the disease and healthy groups, by real-time PCR assays. Specificity and sensitivity of miRNAs was tested by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis in COVID-19 patients. RESULTS: The expression level of all miRNAs in COVID-19 patients was significantly higher than in the healthy group. Therefore, the expression pattern of miR-29a-3p, miR-146a-3p and let-7b-3p in the post-acute COVID-19 phase was significantly different from the acute COVID-19 phase. ROC analyses demonstrated that miR-29a-3p, -155-5p and -146a-3p may serve as the novel biomarker for COVID-19 diagnosis with high specificity and sensitivity. In addition, miR-29a-3p, and -146a-3p can maybe act as novel biomarkers for distinguishing acute from post-acute phase of COVID-19 disease. DISCUSSION: The difference in miRNA expression pattern between COVID-19 patients and those in the healthy group, and between acute COVID-19 with post-acute COVID-19, suggested that cellular miRNAs could be used as promising biomarkers for diagnosis and monitoring of COVID-19.

RESUMO

Siderophores are small organic compounds secreted by microorganisms under iron-depleted conditions which enhance the uptake of iron. Siderophores can play vital roles in ecology, agriculture, bioremediation, biosensor, and medicine. In recent years, the concept of siderophore-based biosensing devices has opened new horizons in high precision detection of various metal ions especially the iron, microorganisms, phosphopeptides, antibiotics as well pesticides. Once combined with nanomaterials, nano-scale siderophore systems provide powerful analytical platforms for detection of low concentration of metal ions and numerous pathogens. In this article, a brief overview of general aspects of siderophore is firstly discussed. In addition, a clear and concise review of recent advances of siderophore-based biosensors (siderosensor) and nanosensors are mainly discussed herein. Subsequently, future perspectives and challenges of siderophore-based sensors are discussed briefly.

Nanostructure Cu-Zn mixed-oxide (CZMO) have been prepared by an impregnation method using copper nitrate and zinc oxide tetrapod precursors. X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the structural of CZMO. The XRD patterns confirmed metal oxides formation and their good crystallinity. In agreement with XRD results, FESEM images also illustrated nanosized particles with an average nanocrystallite size of 33 nm. The photocatalytic activity of CZMO was studied using the photocatalytic decolorization of C.I. Reactive Orange 16 (V3R) in aqueous environment. The results indicated that the CZMO display good photocatalytic efficiency. The related photocatalytic mechanism was discussed based on the coupling of zinc-copper oxide.

RESUMO

Two kind of CuO-ZnO nanocomposite working electrodes were synthesized by sol-gel technology and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Their characteristics were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum (DRS). CuO-ZnO nanocomposite thin films were prepared doctor blade technique on the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) and used as working electrodes in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC). Their photovoltaic behavior were compared with standard using D35 dye and an electrolyte containing [Co(bpy)3](PF6)2, [Co(pby)3](PF6)3, LiClO4, and 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP). The ranges of short-circuit current (JSC) from 0.18 to 0.21 (mA/cm(2)), open-circuit voltage (VOC) from 0.24 to 0.55V, and fill factor from 0.34 to 0.39 were obtained for the DSSCs made using the working electrodes. The efficiency of the working electrodes after the addition of TBL was more than doubled. The light scattering and carrier transport properties of these composites promote the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
